Dermot and Caro O'Neill met when sailing boats around the world and eventually settled close to Caro's family in the beautiful countryside of North Devon. They bought an old farm a few miles from Holsworthy 10 years ago and planted an extensive woodland of over 15000 saplings. The land is located near Blagdon Moor Wharf at the end of the now disused Bude canal. This link to the old canal and their love and knowledge of boats inspired the idea to introduce barges on a private lake. The original lake which had been drained to facilitate agriculture was reinstated by Dermot and Caro and then extended to incorporate a rich wildlife wetland. The houseboats were designed by Dermot specifically for this project to provide the maximum comfort and space. They hoped the boats would appeal to those who love nature, the adventure of house boat living and want to spend time away from it all. Dermot looks after the boats and the 35 acre estate personally with loving care. The natural grassland, lake and wetlands are never sprayed so that they have become a rich habitat abundant with species which people come far and wide to see. The lake itself if stocked with rainbow trout which feed naturally from lake sources and which make excellent fishing sport for those with a penchant for fly fishing and if you catch any, you can smoke them on the banks of the lake using the Blagdon trout smoker which is available there for guests.
Blagdon Water was listed as one of "Europe's most beautiful lakeside retreats" in The Sunday Times Travel Section April 2011.
