If you have back problems, headaches, knee or shoulders that give you jip or any pain that you'd like to shift then this one's for you.
With this GrooVee you get a full osteopathic health assessment and consultation followed by either therapeutic massage, osteopathy treatment or medical acupuncture with experienced and fully qualified osteopath, Sharon Beckwith of Combe Martin Osteopathy at her dedicated home-based treatment room in Combe Martin. It's intensive, gentle and restorative.
You'll arrive at Sharon's home on the main road through Combe Martin and she'll welcome you into her tasteful Victorian house. You'll relax on the sofa in the comfortable waiting room if you're a little early before you are taken into the adjacent treatment room which has a quality feel with its Farrow and Ball colours, oak and beech wood finishes and professional couch. Sharon is a calm and professional but very open, friendly and confident personality and you'll be reassured by her approach and also by her range of certificates on the wall which are testimony to the four years osteopathic training. She'll invite you first to sit down to complete your contact details and will then begin with an extensive consultation covering your medical history, details of your condition, all of your aches and pains, your lifestyle, eating and digestion and stress profile. She'll gently probe with all sorts of questions to get to the bottom of every symptom to make sure that she has a complete and thorough understanding of your case and you'll feel able to mention all of the little things that bother you that might not even seem relevant to your main complaint. Sharon will ask you undress to your underwear (you may like to wear a vest if you feel the cold) and will guide you through a few simple movements so that she can check your physical alignment and assess your musculoskeletal system. She will also palpate muscle and other tissues as necessary and perform any relevant mechanical and clinical tests with your consent. Once she has completed her assessment, together you will decide what kind of treatment would be most relevant for you, following your preference but taking into account Sharon’s assessment. She may recommend massage, a combination of osteopathic techniques, acupuncture or possibly a mix if you have more than one complaint.
If you have visited Sharon before and have already had a full initial consultation then she will simply do an update assessment, building from the information she gathered last time- reviewing and idenityfing any possible changes or new concerns, and then proceeding with her recommended treatment so that you get maximum time on the couch!
Whether its massage, osteopathy or acupuncture that is required, Sharon will show you to the very comfortable couch and ask you to sit or lie down on your back, front or side depending on which area she will be treating. The couch itself is probably the most comfortable couch in North Devon! First of all it’s heated, which is both relaxing and soothing and whilst it is designed to help you relax your muscles it also adds a touch of luxury. Secondly its completely adjustable- the face cradle is on an adjustable section of the couch and its height can be altered to meet your neck position, and is wonderfully cushioned too so that you feel no pressure in your neck or forehead as you lie facedown- rare comfort indeed. Thirdly, the foot end of the couch below your knees is also adjustable which means that it can be lowered or heightened to suit your spinal requirements, which brings relief instantly as the pressure is taken off any area where you feel strain when lying down whether on your back or front, with your spine completely aligned. Once you're settled comfortably the massage, acupuncture or joint mobilisation/adjustment begins. The massage is slow, deliberate and precise, clearly given by an osteopathic expert but with excellent flow. Perfect pressure that is effective without being painful, so it's relaxing as well as doing you good.
The acupuncture is the kind that is often recommended by the medical profession because of its proven results in pain management and tension relief as it works on the neurological pathways using specialist sterilised acupuncture needles which are placed in specific points on the body. There is very good scientific evidence showing that acupuncture can help with short term relief of knee, neck and lower back pain, and tension type headaches and migraine. It has also been shown to relieve nausea and vomiting amongst other complaints. Sharon's expertise as an osteopath, coupled with her training in acupuncture is a powerful combination to get good results. The needles are left in the surface of the skin and are removed usually after 5 or 10 minutes.
When it's all done and you've got dressed, you'll enjoy a glass of refreshing water as Sharon talks you through what she has found and any dietary or exercise tips or requirements that you need to follow at home. It may be that you don't need to go back but if you do need a follow up treatment as a GrooVee member you will get it at half price too so you'll pay just £20 instead of the normal £40 (although you'll book and pay for it directly with Sharon at the time). When you leave you'll feel satisfied that you have had the opportunity to discuss your ailments and pain condition in detail, you'll feel confident in your treatment plan as well as feeling the benefits of your treatment.
Having a chronic lower back complaint, shoulder pain and regular headaches which come from the hours spent at a desk and computer, I have visited a number of osteopaths over the years. Sharon’s consultation was one of the most thorough I have ever had - she leaves no stone unturned, and her gentle, friendly questioning and probing leads you to mention small points about your symptoms and those little niggles that you might have forgotten about or don't know are linked to your principal problem. Her knowledge of the human body and musculoskeletal structure is clear and her explanation of the cause of your symptoms and the path to a fix is easy to understand. She'll have a clear view as to whether massage, osteopathy or acupuncture is the best route for you in the light of the informative consultation, although if you don't like the idea of the needles then Sharon can usually adapt her massage treatment to give you similar benefit where she might have recommended acupuncture.
Please note that there are some rare situations where treatment may not be administered. Osteopaths are trained to check for signs of serious conditions they cannot treat. If such a condition were suspected, Sharon would explain her concerns and refer you to see your GP or hospital for further investigations. Similarly, treatment may not be appropriate in some cases where you are having or have recently had particular treatments or surgery or are currently suffering from certain conditions. If this can be ascertained when the initial consultation is booked, Sharon may advise deferring the consultation (in which case the time limit of the deal will be extended) or if it becomes evident during the consultation then she may suggest deferring treatment to a later date for which you would still receive the 50% discount for follow up treatments mentioned in this deal. If you are in any doubt you can contact Sharon in advance before you buy in via her website at www.cmosteopathy.co.uk
