You'll arrive at Rowan Tree Studios just before 10am on the day of your workshop with no trouble using a sat nav as it takes you virtually to the door. Otherwise it's easy enough to find down the first turning off the main road to Clovelly. Parking is easy: you park right outside on the drive of the Studio which is a converted Granary. You'll get a lovely warm welcome from Sarah. She's such an easy going, open kind of person that you'll quickly feel as if you've known her for years .The day starts with Tea/Coffee with your fellow students in the light and airy purpose built craft studio before you sit round the lovely big craft table.
The first part of the day will be learning what a perfume comprises and all the terminology including different types of scent with examples from well known perfumes as well as the different notes and which oils belong in each note group. You will then start training your nose by using scent strips and essential oils in perfumers alcohol to describe each scent in your own words. This will allow you know what oils will give you the type of smell you want for your own perfume later in the day. You will take regular nose breaks outside to avoid taxing your new found scent skills and if you wish you can take your strips outside to have some fresh air. You'll stop for lunch at around 12.30pm with your fellow learners - a home baked (and nice and crispy on the outside) jacket potato with your choice of filling made by Sarah's husband Casie (yes, this truly is a family run studio), which you'll have together around the large table in the studio- it's a friendly and fun lunch.
After lunch and once you are familiar with the different notes you will start to build 3 mini perfumes called accords. These will be a top note, mid note & base note accord and these will be used to blend your unique perfume in your own atomiser bottle. You will build your perfume in your glass bottle and keep notes so you can duplicate your exact blend in the future. You will then finish the day making a simple blended perfume oil using your new found skills.
You will take home 4 spray perfumes and a perfume oil as well as course notes and records from your day. You will also receive a discount voucher to use against any of Rowan Tree Studios other lovely courses in the future.
I love Sarah's workshops and was seriously impressed with the whole set up of the Rowan Tree Studio and Sarah's approach to her work there. It's a beautiful space , and the gorgeous scents as you walk into the building from the soap and body product making are wonderfully uplifting. It's really well equipped, and Sarah's experience of running classes and workshops is totally clear. She's passionate about sharing the knowledge that she had passed down to her from her mum and her grandma, and she has developed at The Clovelly Soap Company and is a clear and capable communicator as well as being infinitely patient, loving and kind. The food and company were great too with a constant supply of tea and coffee to make us really feel at home. I love perfumes, especially those with natural ingredients , and fancy I might be the next Jo Malone so I can't wait to do this one!
