Go before Christmas to create some unique and extra special hand made gifts or go after Christmas to give yourself something to look forward to in the New Year , or even give this super creative experience as a gift voucher this Christmas to someone in your life who's arty, or would like to be!
You'll arrive at Annabel's studio which is tucked behind her home at the end of a lane where you'll join up to a maximum of four others so you'll be sure you'll get lots of personal attention from Annabel whose enthusiasm for print art is infectious just as her knowledge and experience is impressive. After you've made your introductions, you'll pop on one of the aprons provided and Annabel will talk you through what you'll be doing, showing you examples of her own and other people's work so that you can see what's involved and then in no time at all she'll have you working on your designs inspired by a range of possible shapes and images. You,lol also learn different ways how to repeat your chosen image across a length of fabric to create a patterned piece. Half drop, full drop, mirrored repeat units will be taught but don't worry all is simple and suitable for beginners. You may want to bring your own imagery to fit inside a 15cm by 15cm square, or you can use the images provided for you to trace. You'll then carve your design in to the lino block which is 15cm square using the lino cutting tools provided. Once completed Annabel will show you how to ink them up using specialist fabric inks before you do some test prints of your block onto cotton fabric. You lay your block down on the cotton and then use a roller to give sufficient pressure to transfer the ink to the fabric. You'll be able to test out the way the pattern will repeat before you print your actual piece- whether a tote bag, a cushion cover, or a square of cotton fabric which will frame up beautifully at home, or which you can use to make into something lovely. After one colour is printed you may wish to highlight areas of the image by 'overprinting' with a second colour. If you want to pay an extra £10 on the day you can even print a lovely silk scarf which would make a lovely Christmas or birthday gift. When you have completed your printing, you iron the fabric to fix the ink into the cotton making it completely washable. Nothing can match the anticpation and feeling of joy and delight as you see the results: vibrant, beautiful colours to bring your very own textile design with its shapes, textures and flow to life. The process is fascinating as it is also totally delightful and the oohs and aahs will be plentiful as each of you see the beautiful prints of the others emerge. Just like children they're all beautiful and unique, and you'll love them each for different elements. It's nourishing. And it's utterly joyful. So fabulous to see your textile prints hanging up on the rack to dry - proud and perfectly formed!
I am looking forward to Fabric Block Lino printing with Annabel having already enjoyed a morning of monoprinting with her earlier this year. I'm certainly no artist and so was a little intimidated at the idea of doing something technical like printing, but I really needn't have worried. In a small group there is plenty of help from Annabel (and she is completely inspiring and fills you with confidence throughout) as she'll watch you all the way, helping where needed, explaining the techniques and helping you to get the best results with helpful suggestions but without taking over. It's just the right amount of guidance to make you feel safe, but also free to experiment and find your creative self. I loved it. We learnt a lot about printing and there was plenty of laughter as we worked. The printing process is amazing in every way and one of the most satisfying things I can think of. The end results make such lovely gifts and I am already thinking of gorgeous hand made things I can turn my block printed cotton samples into, each with my own unique design. If you are arty or not, this is a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday - personal and creative development and the freedom that brings while you make something unique. Wonderful.
